Basics

  • Abdominal pain is discomfort or cramping felt in the area between the chest and the pelvis, commonly referred to as the stomach or belly.

Common causes

  • Indigestion or overeating.

  • Gastrointestinal issues like gas or constipation.

  • Infections such as gastroenteritis aka “stomach flu”.

  • Menstrual cramps in women.

When it's okay to monitor symptoms

  • If abdominal pain is mild and related to known factors like overeating, menses.

  • When it improves with rest or changes in diet.

When to talk to a doctor

  • Persistent or severe abdominal pain.

  • Pain accompanied by vomiting or unexplained weight loss.

  • Pain that radiates to the chest, back, or shoulder.

When to seek emergency care

  • Severe abdominal pain, especially if it's accompanied by a high fever.

  • Pain that gets significantly worse with pressing on it or walking/jumping.

  • Severe pain after an injury or accident.

Home remedies and over-the-counter medications

  • Apply a warm compress to the abdomen for relief.

  • Over-the-counter antacids (maalox/tums/famotidine) for indigestion.

  • Stay hydrated with clear fluids.

  • If constipation is a factor, consider over-the-counter laxatives.
