Abdominal pain is discomfort or cramping felt in the area between the chest and the pelvis, commonly referred to as the stomach or belly.
Common causes
Indigestion or overeating.
Gastrointestinal issues like gas or constipation.
Infections such as gastroenteritis aka “stomach flu”.
Menstrual cramps in women.
When it's okay to monitor symptoms
If abdominal pain is mild and related to known factors like overeating, menses.
When it improves with rest or changes in diet.
When to talk to a doctor
Persistent or severe abdominal pain.
Pain accompanied by vomiting or unexplained weight loss.
Pain that radiates to the chest, back, or shoulder.
When to seek emergency care
Severe abdominal pain, especially if it's accompanied by a high fever.
Pain that gets significantly worse with pressing on it or walking/jumping.
Severe pain after an injury or accident.
Home remedies and over-the-counter medications
Apply a warm compress to the abdomen for relief.
Over-the-counter antacids (maalox/tums/famotidine) for indigestion.
Stay hydrated with clear fluids.
If constipation is a factor, consider over-the-counter laxatives.
